Spyware is a type of malware designed for monitoring the use of a certain device. This is accomplished by sending out data from the target device to someone outside of its intended network. There are several types of spyware on the market today, some taking pictures on your phone, others listening in on your phone calls or tracking your GPS location without your knowledge or consent. Much of this software can be downloaded through your phone’s "app store", which is why some are calling it "spyware" or "malware on demand". For this type of remote installation to occur, someone has to know your device ID, Device Management Signing Key (DM SK), and Android ID. While these items are not available to the general public, they are available via reverse engineering or can be purchased on the dark market. Once this information is obtained by a bad actor, they can load the spyware onto your device by first installing a legitimate app on your device. This allows them access to your location data through GPS tracking, as well as giving them the ability to run programs in the background without your knowledge. How you can protect yourself? If your device is infected with spyware, the best thing to do is... - Reset your device to factory settings. This will remove all of the spyware from the device. Once reset, update your operating system to the latest version. - Once you have reset your phone, turn on remote wipe through either Google Device Manager or Samsung Find My Mobile. - Although these steps are not fool proof, they are sure to prevent most common attacks on mobile devices. This is especially true if you are using a strong password, have installed only apps that are from respectable app stores and have enabled fingerprint unlock if it is available on your type of device. - These steps are not fool proof, but they are sure to prevent most common attacks on mobile devices.
